How Many Knives (or Tools) Do You Need to Carry?

When I started my little hobby of knife collecting it did not occur to me that one would carry more than one knife at a time.  Of course, I suppose there are always subtle extremes where people load up with knives and tools as if they are ready to embark on a cross-country expedition.  But the idea of EDC, or Everyday Carry, is to be prepared for normal needs that may arise on a daily basis.  Yet this also varies depending on your daily work or event.  I have come to discover that EDC is not the same if I am in dress clothes vs. when I am in casuals vs. when I am going to the fire department vs. when I am hunting, etc.  You get the point.  Over at Knife Center on You Tube they have a brief exploration of this on their FAQs on this question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTP1zb5Vzuk (David C. Anderson – see also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m22MRO6S5tY).   The Blade Forum also has a section devoted to this: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/how-many-knives-do-you-carry-daily.943111/ (where they mention more than once carrying the SAK Rambler, my new favorite EDC).

During my workday as a pastor, when I am out and about on visits, at meetings, teaching, etc. I carry my SAK Rambler on a suspended pocket clip, and in another pocket, either in my pants or suit jacket, I carry a small multitool, specifically the NEXTOOL Mini Sailor Lite.  If I am in casuals (e.g. blue jeans), I carry a SOG Powerpint in a nylon sheath on my belt (with the mods I described in another post and two extra screwdriver bits in the far end) and then another knife that is somewhat in flux.  Sometimes it’s the US Army Utility Knife (aka as the "Demo") on a suspended pocket clip, sometimes it has been the Camillus Wedge, and just yesterday I ordered the CIVIVI Mini Praxis, which is highly spoken of online (and happened to be on sale!).  I also have other ideas.  For the fire department I carry a Camillus Wedge and a small no-brand multitool in my bunkers, and on my person I will often carry a GERBER Dual Force.  For hunting, that is still to be determined.  This year I will carry a MORAKNIV Companion, but I will probably also carry some combination of multitools, one with an axe.

Some people (maybe most?) carry nothing at all.  But I like to be prepared, even for the little events in need of a tool.
