The Neck Knife - An Omesio Addition to a Great Carry Idea
Admittedly, I wasn't initially drawn to the idea of the neck knife. After some research I warmed up to the idea, in part realizing the convenience of having a knife accessible, especially when wearing wildland fire gear. In our department we wear a one-piece coverall (as seen below) that zips up the front. Although a belt knife would technically be accessible, it seemed more awkward to go fishing for it through a pocket slot vs. simply zipping down the front and pulling the knife out.
There are certainly other justifications for wearing the knife around ones neck vs. on the belt. And there are certainly downsides, as well. I eventually settled on an OMESIO Neck Knife I found on Amazon (see below). As printed on the blade itself the knife uses D2 steel. The sheath is convertible for use either with a neck chain or paracord lanyard, or with the belt clip. The belt clip on this model is especially good as it wraps around the belt as opposed to simply clipping on it (again, see picture below). The knife snaps securely in a Kydex sheath and can be pulled easily with a firm pull down.
If you search online for reviews, the first two on Youtube are very positive. The price point is good at around $24. Full tang, the blade is very sharp as well. The blade is small - 5.82''. But you wouldn't want a huge knife around your neck and this one hides well beneath a shirt or coat, which might also be a consideration if you choose to use the knife as a self-defense concealed carry.
This knife will be especially useful for me, as I said, during wildland fire season, but may also be helpful at other times in firefighting where accessing a knife inside ones gear is cumbersome and tricky.
